Laft, Stavlaft or Element House: Which Wooden Home Is Right for You?
When planning a wooden house, choosing the right construction system is one of the most important decisions. At Ecolaft, we build three main types of wooden homes: Laft, Stavlaft and Element houses. All are based on timber construction, but each offers a different combination of character, architectural freedom, energy efficiency and construction method.
So which one is right for you?
The answer depends less on which system is “best” and more on what you expect from your future home.
Laft – traditional solid timber and natural character
A Laft house, or log house, is built from horizontal solid timber logs that form the main wall structure. It is the most traditional of the three systems and has a distinctive, natural appearance.
The greatest advantage of Laft is its character. Exposed timber creates a warm and authentic atmosphere that works particularly well in forests, mountains, countryside and other natural surroundings. It is an excellent choice for clients who dream of a traditional Scandinavian-style cabin or simply want the structure of the house itself to be part of the interior design.
Laft construction can also provide good thermal performance, but this depends on the dimensions of the logs, joints, windows and the design of the complete building envelope. Like all solid-timber construction, it also requires proper consideration of timber movement and moisture protection.
Choose Laft if your priority is natural timber, traditional character and the authentic feeling of a log home.
Stavlaft – Scandinavian architecture with greater flexibility
Stavlaft is based on a timber post-and-beam structure. Instead of the entire wall being made from solid logs, the structural loads are carried by vertical posts and horizontal beams, with insulated wall sections between them.
This gives Stavlaft a distinctive Scandinavian appearance while allowing considerably more architectural freedom than traditional log construction.
Large windows, open spaces, strong structural lines and combinations of timber with other façade materials are all possible. At the same time, the timber frame can remain visible and become an important architectural feature.
Because the spaces between the timber structure can be designed as insulated wall assemblies, Stavlaft also offers strong potential for modern energy performance.
Choose Stavlaft if you want Scandinavian architecture, visible timber and more freedom in the design of your home.
Element – modern, efficient and highly flexible
An Element house is a prefabricated timber-frame home. Large parts of the walls and other structural elements are manufactured in a controlled factory environment before being transported to the building site.
This approach makes construction more organised and can significantly reduce the amount of work required on site. It is particularly attractive for clients who value construction speed, precision and modern building performance.
Element construction also offers extensive architectural freedom. The timber structure can be incorporated into highly insulated wall assemblies, making it suitable for modern permanent homes where energy efficiency and indoor comfort are important.
The exterior can also be adapted to many architectural styles, from contemporary minimalist façades to more traditional Scandinavian designs.
Choose Element if your priorities are modern design, energy efficiency, flexibility and a streamlined construction process.
Which wooden house is best for your needs?
If you are looking for a traditional holiday house surrounded by nature, Laft may be the natural choice. Its solid timber construction creates the classic cabin atmosphere many people associate with a Scandinavian retreat.
If you want a distinctive Scandinavian home with visible timber and modern architecture, Stavlaft offers an attractive balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.
If you are planning a modern family home and prioritise energy efficiency, design flexibility and fast construction, an Element house may be the most suitable solution.
However, these categories are not absolute. A Laft house can be designed for modern comfort, while Stavlaft and Element houses can both be adapted to traditional architectural styles. The final performance of any wooden house depends on its complete design, materials, insulation, windows, airtightness, ventilation and quality of construction.
The right construction system starts with your priorities
There is no universally “best” wooden house.
Laft is about the character of solid timber.
Stavlaft is about timber architecture and Scandinavian design.
Element construction is about flexibility, efficiency and modern performance.
At Ecolaft, we work with all three systems because different locations, lifestyles and architectural ideas require different solutions.
Whether you are planning a mountain cabin, a coastal holiday house or a modern family home, the best starting point is to define how you want to live in the house. From there, the right construction system becomes much easier to choose.
